Can Platelet Indices Be New Biomarkers for Severe Endometriosis?
Platelet indices, including PCT and PLT, were significantly higher in advanced endometriosis stages, while MPV and PDW were lower, correlating positively with white blood cell count.

This retrospective chart review studied 164 women with surgically confirmed endometriosis to assess whether platelet indices—platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT), and mean platelet volume (MPV)—vary with disease severity and correlate with inflammatory markers, particularly white blood cell (WBC) count, across initial (ASRM stages I–II) versus advanced disease (stages III–IV). The study found that in advanced endometriosis, MPV and PDW were significantly lower while platelet count (PLT) and PCT were significantly higher compared with initial disease, and WBC count showed a significant positive correlation with PLT and PCT but negative correlations with MPV and PDW. A stated caveat is that indices were measured from chart data/CBCs without explicit control for potential confounders and the design does not establish causality. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it evaluates platelet indices (MPV, PDW, PCT, PLT) as biomarkers related to severe versus initial endometriosis and their correlation with inflammatory WBC levels.
