p53 Arg72Pro polymorphism confers the susceptibility to endometriosis among Asian and Caucasian populations

This paper conducted a meta-analysis of 11 case–control studies (1834 endometriosis cases and 2331 controls) to resolve inconsistent findings about whether the TP53 p53 Arg72Pro polymorphism is associated with endometriosis risk. Using PubMed/Embase/Cochrane and Chinese databases (searches up to April 30, 2015) with odds ratio pooling, the authors found that the 72Pro variant increased endometriosis susceptibility compared with 72Arg (e.g., Pro vs. Arg OR 1.298; Pro/Pro vs. Arg/Arg OR 1.751), with effects also supported in the dominant model. In stratified analyses, associations were stronger in Asian populations and in studies whose control groups conformed to Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, while subgroup analyses by rAFS stage and menopausal status showed no significant associations. The paper’s limitation, as implied by its meta-analytic design, is that it depends on the included studies’ designs and available subgroup data rather than collecting new participant-level information.
