Endometriosis in adolescents
This study found that adolescents diagnosed with endometriosis via laparoscopy reported varied symptoms, experienced diagnostic delays, and showed positive pain resolution outcomes one year post-treatment.

This retrospective case series reviewed 25 adolescent females (≤21 years) with pelvic pain who underwent multipuncture laparoscopy at a tertiary referral center and were visually and histologically diagnosed with endometriosis, collecting preoperative symptoms, referral patterns, diagnostic delays, prior diagnoses/treatments, surgical findings, and 1-year postoperative outcomes. The most common presenting complaints were dysmenorrhea (64%), abnormal/irregular uterine bleeding (60%), and gastrointestinal and genitourinary symptoms (56% and 52%, respectively), with a mean time from symptom onset to diagnosis of 22.8 months; patients had a median of 3 physicians evaluated their pain before diagnosis, and many received alternative diagnoses such as pelvic inflammatory disease and irritable bowel syndrome. At surgery, disease was stage I in 68% of cases, and atypical lesions were commonly observed; at 1 year, 64% reported resolved pain, 16% improved pain, 12% continued pain, and 8% had recurrent pain. A key caveat is that the study population consisted of adolescents with severe, medically refractory pelvic pain who underwent laparoscopy and lacked prior surgical diagnosis or radiographic endometriosis, limiting generalizability to all adolescents with pelvic pain. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it specifically characterizes the diagnostic delay, symptom patterns, surgical findings, and 1-year outcomes of adolescents with laparoscopy-confirmed endometriosis.
