Retroperitoneal endometriosis in postmenopausal woman causing deep vein thrombosis: case report and review of the literature
This case report details a postmenopausal woman who presented with deep vein thrombosis due to retroperitoneal endometriosis causing iliac vein compression.

This paper reports a 63-year-old postmenopausal woman with six weeks of abdominal pain and left leg pain and swelling, in whom imaging showed a retroperitoneal mass compressing the left iliac vein and associated with deep vein thrombosis. The authors performed laparotomy with removal of the pelvic masses, and histology confirmed endometriosis; follow-up imaging about a month later showed a considerable decrease in thrombosis of the homolateral external iliac veins after postoperative management. The major caveat stated is that endometriosis is uncommon after menopause and neoplastic transformation of endometrium must be excluded, so the diagnosis requires careful consideration. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it presents a retroperitoneal endometriosis case in a postmenopausal woman causing deep vein thrombosis and reviews related literature.
