Adenomyosis among samples from hysterectomy due to abnormal uterine bleeding in Ahwaz, southern Iran
This study examined 100 hysterectomy specimens from patients with abnormal uterine bleeding in Ahwaz, Iran, finding an overall adenomyosis prevalence of 49%, often co-occurring with other uterine lesions.

This cross-sectional retrospective study evaluated the frequency of histologically confirmed adenomyosis among 100 consecutive women who underwent hysterectomy for abnormal uterine bleeding at two teaching hospitals in Ahwaz, Iran, with specimens reviewed by a single pathologist from June 2007 to June 2010. Overall, adenomyosis was found in 49% of samples, either alone (21% for adenomyosis alone) or in combination, with leiomyoma being the most frequent accompanying lesion (adenomyosis with leiomyoma 21%), and adenomyosis concentrated in the 30–60 and 60–90 age ranges. The authors report that adenomyosis alone was rare in women under 30, and emphasize that prevalence was higher than some prior reports.
