Visceral hypersensitivity in endometriosis: a new target for treatment?
This study found that visceral hypersensitivity is common in women with endometriosis, regardless of disease severity, and may intensify their abdominal pain.

The study evaluated whether visceral hypersensitivity associated with irritable bowel syndrome could amplify symptoms attributed to endometriosis in women attending gynecological clinics for lower abdominal pain. Using assessments of balloon distension visceral sensitivity, symptom profiles, and psychological status after laparoscopy, the authors compared 20 women with minimal–mild endometriosis, 20 with moderate–severe endometriosis, 20 with laparoscopy-negative abdominal pain, 20 asymptomatic controls, and 20 women with IBS. They found that, compared with controls, both minimal–mild and moderate–severe endometriosis groups had a higher prevalence of IBS-consistent symptoms, and (as described in the abstract) endometriosis groups also showed greater visceral sensitivity relative to controls, with IBS levels used as a comparator; a stated caveat is that the study was limited by its small sample size. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it investigates visceral hypersensitivity as a potential treatment target and its overlap with IBS-associated symptom mechanisms.
