This paper reports a single case of ovarian cystic endometriosis with uterine adenomyosis in a privately owned 2-year-old female guinea pig that presented with reproductive failure, weight loss, and expulsion of hemorrhagic material, and was found by ultrasound to have a large uterine mass. After emergency laparotomy with excision of the ovary and uterus, histopathology showed ectopic glandular tissue in the uterine muscular wall (adenomyosis) and endometrial-type epithelium within fluid-filled ovarian cystic structures consistent with classic cystic ovarian endometriosis; immunohistochemistry using estrogen and CD10 aimed to confirm estrogen-secreting glandular epithelium and stromal reaction. The authors note that immunohistochemical and histologic features were “strongly suggestive” of endometriosis, but the case had limited evidence because the animal died 3 months later of unrelated causes and necropsy reportedly found no signs of endometriosis.
