The usefulness of periostin determination in gynecology and obstetrics
This review summarizes current knowledge on periostin expression in gynecology and obstetrics, highlighting its limited but emerging roles in cervical cancer, myometrial function, endometriosis, ovarian cancer, and pregnancy.

This paper is a literature review that systematically searched PubMed and Google Scholar for English original and review articles up to December 2019 describing periostin (POSTN/OSF-2) expression in gynecology and obstetrics. The authors report that most evidence concerns POSTN in endometriosis and especially ovarian cancer, while only limited work examines uterine myometrial commitment (maintenance during pregnancy and induction of parturition) and a small number of studies assess periostin-related findings among pregnant women. They conclude that although periostin structure, signaling pathways, and functions are well described, many issues remain unresolved and further studies are needed to verify proposed hypotheses, with the caveat that the scope is limited to English-language literature and does not add new experimental data. Relevance to endometriosis: the review explicitly summarizes prior studies of periostin expression in endometriotic lesions, though its main focus is an overall synthesis of periostin knowledge across gynecology and obstetrics.
