Abstract
Summary: A randomized, controlled, double‐blind clinical trial was conducted to compare the effect of the prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor mefenamic acid (Ponstan) given during menstruation to that of a placebo in the treatment of menorrhagia. A statistically significant reduction in menstrual blood loss was recorded by 14 of 15 patients in the mefenamic acid group. The incidence of side effects was minimal. Placebo therapy was significantly more effective than no therapy. Further exploration of the use of mefenamic acid in patients with excessive menstrual loss is recommended.
