This chapter discusses how assisted conception—specifically IVF, GIFT, and ZIFT—is used in the management of male infertility, noting that IVF was originally developed for female infertility due to bilateral tubal occlusion and later expanded to other causes including endometriosis and male factor infertility. It reports that pregnancy rates in IVF series improved from 16.5% in earlier reports to about 30% in later series, and frames several procedural options and outcomes in terms of male-factor indications. A key limitation is that the chapter describes and synthesizes evidence at a high level rather than providing a unified, controlled comparison across techniques, and it emphasizes early/variable outcome series. Relevance to endometriosis: the paper states that IVF has been employed successfully for other causes of infertility “such as endometriosis” alongside unexplained infertility and male factor infertility, though its main focus is the role of assisted conception in male infertility.

Abstract

This chapter discusses the role of assisted conception, i.e. in vitro fertilisation (IVF), gamete intra-fallopian transfer (GIFT), and zygote intra-fallopian transfer (ZIFT) in the management of male infertility. In vitro fertilisation was initially developed as a treatment for female infertility secondary to bilateral fallopian tube occlusion. Indications for its use have broadened and it is now being employed successfully for other causes of infertility such as endometriosis, unexplained infertility and male factor infertility (Rogers 1989; Yates and De Kretser 1987). Pregnancy rates have gradually improved from 16.5% in earlier series to approximately 30% in later series (Edwards et al. 1984). Preview Unable to display preview. Download preview PDF.
