Advantages of the association of resveratrol with oral contraceptives for management of endometriosis-related pain
Resveratrol combined with oral contraceptives significantly reduced endometriosis-related pain and inhibited aromatase and cyclo-oxygenase-2 expression more effectively than oral contraceptives alone.

This open office-based study evaluated whether adding low-dose resveratrol (30 mg/day) to a continuous oral contraceptive regimen of drospirenone 3 mg plus ethinylestradiol 30 µg improves endometriosis-related pain in 12 reproductive-age patients who remained symptomatic after at least 6 months on the contraceptive alone. After switching, pain and dysmenorrhea scores decreased further within 2 months, with 82% reporting complete resolution of dysmenorrhea and pelvic pain and an 80% amenorrhea rate; the paper notes no patient became completely pain-free during the contraceptive-only phase due to breakthrough bleeding. In a separate immunohistochemistry component in 42 laparoscopically evaluated patients, the combination with resveratrol was associated with significantly lower eutopic endometrial Cox-2 and reduced aromatase expression, and 6/7 patients’ pretreatment aromatase staining turned negative after treatment. Limitations include the small symptomatic cohort and the nonrandomized, treatment-comparison design. This paper is centrally about endometriosis—resveratrol added to drospirenone/ethinylestradiol for reducing endometriosis-related pain and modulating aromatase/Cox-2 expression in eutopic endometrium.
