This retrospective study from a single endoscopy center in Nnewi, Nigeria examined 490 infertile women who underwent laparoscopy with dye testing between 2006 and 2008, aiming to determine the prevalence and laparoscopic features of endometriosis. Endometriosis was diagnosed in 24 women, for a reported prevalence of 4.9%, with a mean age of 30.3 years, and most cases presenting as primary infertility; commonly observed features included chocolate cysts (predominantly bilateral), cul-de-sac adhesions, and frequent tubal adhesions despite more than half showing bilateral tubal patency on dye test. The authors limited inclusion to women with laparoscopic diagnoses of endometriosis and excluded prior pelvic surgery and chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, but the work is based on a small, single-center retrospective sample. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it reports the prevalence and specific laparoscopic findings of endometriosis in infertile women undergoing diagnostic laparoscopy and dye testing, directly informing endometriosis-focused research.
