Abstract

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (Intervention). The objectives are as follows: To determine the effectiveness of medical therapy used for hormonal suppression before or after, or before and after surgery for endometriosis. Effectiveness will be assessed in terms of eradication of endometriosis, improvement of symptoms (including pain), pregnancy rates, and tolerability of treatment, compared to surgery and placebo or surgery alone. This review aims to examine the following hypotheses 1. Medical treatment for hormonal suppression of endometriosis prior to surgery is more effective than surgery alone. 2. Medical treatment for hormonal suppression of endometriosis after surgery is more effective than surgery alone. 3. Medical treatment for hormonal suppression of endometriosis before and after surgery is more effective than surgery alone. 4. Medical treatment for hormonal suppression of endometriosis before surgery is more effective than medical treatment for hormonal suppression of endometriosis after surgery.
