Abstract

The recent development of vitrification has completely changed the way we consider today freezing (oocytes and embryos). Based on the excellent outcomes obtained after warming, a different new range of indications has evolved in the last few years. One of the main ones is oocyte freezing for medical and nonmedical indications. Whereas oocyte freezing for fertility preservation is not considered experimental anymore and is socially well accepted, social oocyte freezing is still controversial. In between these two indications (oncological and social), we have medical indications for social freezing that are not oncological conditions, such as endometriosis. The reason to consider oocyte freezing in these particular group of women would be the risk of losing their reproductive potential with the progression of the disease or after radical surgery if needed, as well as to avoid the psychological pressure of having a progressive disease that may be deleterious for their future fertility. Although data is scarce, we will review the indications as well as the outcome in women with endometriosis, and discuss the pros and cons of this procedure, supported by recent data from our group.
