Abstract
BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to assess the time elapsed between the onset of symptoms and the diagnosis of endometriosis and the factors associated with the diagnostic delay in women from Campinas, Brazil.METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. Two hundred women with surgically confirmed endometriosis were interviewed and invited to answer a questionnaire during one of her scheduled appointment at outpatient clinic.RESULTS: The median (interquartile range) time elapsed from onset of symptoms and the diagnosis of endometriosis was 7.0 (3.5 -12.1) years. The younger was the women at the onset of symptoms, the longer it took to diagnose endometriosis: median delay of 12.1 (8.0 -17.2) years when symptoms initiated during adolescence and 3.3 (2.0 -5.5) years when symptoms started in women 30 years of age or more. The median time elapsed between onset of symptoms and diagnosis was shorter for women whose main complaint was infertility: 4.0 years (2.0 -6.0) compared to those with pelvic pain, 7.4 years (3.6 -13.0).CONCLUSION: The delay for the diagnostic of endometriosis was considered long, especially for young women with pelvic pain and adolescents.More information about endometriosis should be offered to general physician and gynaecologists in order to reduce the time to diagnose this disease.
