Histopathology findings in patients presenting with menorrhagia: A study of 100 hysterectomy specimen

This one-and-a-half-year hospital-based study analyzed 100 abdominal hysterectomy specimens from women aged 30–50 years who presented with menorrhagia, using gross and histopathologic examination of endometrium and, when available, cervix and adnexa; histopathological findings were correlated with clinical diagnoses. Adenomyosis was the most frequent diagnosis (31%), followed by leiomyoma (25%) and endometrial hyperplasia (23%), with endometrial polyps present in 4% and additional combined (“dual”) pathologies observed (adenomyosis with hyperplasia in 11% and leiomyoma with adenomyosis in 6%). The paper’s explicit caveat is that it only included hysterectomy cases for menorrhagia and excluded hysterectomies performed for other complaints and malignancies, which limits generalizability to all patients with abnormal uterine bleeding.
