This paper investigated plasma β-endorphin (β-EP) level changes across the menstrual cycle in women with endometriosis and assessed how treatment with Nei-Yi Recipe (NYR) altered β-EP during luteal and follicular phases. It found that in endometriosis, luteal phase β-EP concentrations were significantly reduced in moderate and severe dysmenorrhea groups versus mild and control groups, and that severe dysmenorrhea showed lower luteal than follicular β-EP; β-EP was also lower in patients with pelvic pain than without it. After NYR treatment, plasma β-EP levels were significantly increased in both luteal and follicular phases, whereas in normal women β-EP did not change during the menstrual cycle; the authors frame a potential immunoenhancing and analgesia-related mechanism via β-EP increase. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it specifically measures menstrual-cycle plasma β-endorphin and tests the effect of Nei-Yi Recipe on those levels in women with endometriosis.
