The High Expression of RRM2 Can Predict the Malignant Transformation of Endometriosis
This study found that high expression of RRM2 in ectopic endometriosis tissues correlates with malignant transformation and can serve as a potential predictive marker for endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer.

The study investigated molecular predictors of malignant transformation of ovarian endometriosis (OE) by analyzing gene expression profiles from GEO to identify ribonucleotide reductase M2 (RRM2) as a hub gene, then testing it in patients (44 with endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer and 44 with OE) using immunohistochemistry and RT-qPCR. RRM2 expression was reported as low in endometriosis and high in ovarian cancer, with RRM2 levels positively expressed in eutopic and ectopic endometrium and in cancer tissues from patients with endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer. The ectopic endometrium of endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer patients showed higher RRM2 signals and mRNA levels than ectopic endometrium from OE patients, and RRM2 expression correlated with the proliferation marker Ki-67 in that ectopic tissue. The paper’s main caveat is that it is largely associative—using expression differences and correlation analyses rather than demonstrating causality of RRM2 in malignant transformation. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it specifically evaluates RRM2 as a predictive marker of malignant transformation in ovarian endometriosis.
