Abstract

78 patients with mastalgia associated with benign breast disease were randomized to treatment with the synthetic steroid gestrinone (2.5 mg twice weekly) or placebo for 3 months. Breast pain scores, which were similar in the two groups prior to treatment, were lowered significantly in patients receiving gestrinone after each month of treatment. After 1 month, 65% of patients in the gestrinone arm considered that their treatment was either excellent or good compared with 23% in the placebo arm (p < 0.01). High levels of satisfaction with gestrinone were also recorded at 2 and 3 months. Investigator opinion of treatment was also significantly in favour of gestrinone. No major adverse reactions occurred but menstrual disturbance, acne and non-specific side-effects were all more common with gestrinone. Gestrinone is superior to placebo in the relief of mastalgia. Further evaluation requires randomized comparison with established treatments.
