Association between mRNA Expression of Aromatase, 17β-HSD2, Level of TGF-β1 and Stage of Endometriosis
This study found increased mRNA expression of aromatase and 17β-HSD2, along with higher TGF-β1 levels in endometriosis patients compared to controls, with peritoneal fluid TGF-β1 correlating with endometriosis stage.

This case-control study analyzed 80 women (40 with endometriosis and 40 controls) to test whether mRNA expression of aromatase and 17β-HSD2, and TGF-β1 levels in serum and peritoneal fluid, correlate with endometriosis stage. Using RT-PCR on ectopic and eutopic endometrial tissues and ELISA on serum and peritoneal fluid, the authors found higher aromatase mRNA and higher TGF-β1 (serum and peritoneal fluid) in endometriosis versus controls, alongside lower 17β-HSD2 mRNA in both ectopic and eutopic endometriosis. However, there were no correlations between aromatase, 17β-HSD2, or TGF-β1 serum levels and endometriosis stage, while peritoneal fluid TGF-β1 significantly correlated with stage. The paper’s stated caveat is that stage associations were absent for most variables aside from peritoneal fluid TGF-β1, implying limited explanatory power for lesion stage beyond that measurement. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it examines aromatase, 17β-HSD2, and TGF-β1 expression in relation to endometriosis stage.
