Role of oxidative protein destruction products in the external genital endometriosis pathogenesis and progression

This original research evaluated oxidative protein modification (OPM) products in ectopic endometrium homogenates from 28 women with histologically verified external genital endometriosis, stratifying participants into AAGL stages II–III (n=10) and stage IV (n=18). Using spectrophotometry, the authors found that total OPM products, basic aldehyde-dinitrophenylhydrazones, and total ketone-dinitrophenylhydrazones were significantly higher in stage IV than in stages II–III, along with significantly lower reserve-adaptive potential in stage IV. Correlation analyses showed positive associations between disease severity and the intergroup-differing OPM measures, and a negative association between severity and reserve-adaptive potential. The study’s main caveat is the small sample size and cross-sectional design without reporting longitudinal outcomes.
