Follistatin Is Induced by IL-1β and TNF-α in Stromal Cells From Endometrioma

The study examined how follistatin, an activin-binding protein, is regulated in endometriosis by analyzing endometrioma stromal cells from 9 patients and measuring activin-A and follistatin in endometrioma cystic fluid from 8 patients. In cultured endometrioma stromal cells, IL-1β and TNF-α induced follistatin mRNA and protein, and activin activity in cystic fluid was confirmed by a bioassay, despite follistatin being detectable by ELISA. The mean cystic fluid activin-A and follistatin concentrations were 36.8 ng/mL and 4.0 ng/mL, respectively, and activin activity was reported to be predominant in vivo. The paper is limited by using a small patient sample and by focusing on stromal-cell cytokine regulation without detailing downstream functional consequences.
