The Effects of Ranibizumab on Surgically Induced Endometriosis in a Rat Model: A Preliminary Study

This preliminary randomized rat study examined whether ranibizumab would affect surgically induced endometriosis by implanting endometrial tissue onto the abdominal peritoneum of 18 rats and comparing a ranibizumab-treated group (0.6 mg/kg on days 1 and 14; n=9) versus an untreated control group (n=9) over 28 days. Ranibizumab-treated rats had significantly smaller and lighter explants and significantly lower epithelial histologic scores than controls, with VEGF immunoreactivity also reduced in the treatment group. The authors’ main limitation is that the study is small and explicitly preliminary. Relevance to endometriosis: the paper directly tests ranibizumab regression of surgically induced endometriotic implants in a rat model and evaluates lesion atrophy and VEGF as mechanisms.
