Expression of human β-defensin-2 in the eutopic and ectopic endometrial tissues in patients with endometriosis

This prospective controlled study compared human β-defensin-2 (hBD-2) expression in eutopic and ectopic endometrial tissues from 50 women undergoing laparoscopy for ovarian cystectomy (endometriosis patients) or hysterectomy for uterine fibroids (non-endometriosis controls). Using real-time quantitative PCR, the authors measured hBD-2 gene expression alongside IL-1β and TNF-α, and they assessed hBD-2 protein expression by immunohistochemistry. hBD-2 gene and protein levels in ectopic endometrium were significantly higher in endometriosis patients than in both eutopic endometrium from the same patients and eutopic tissue from non-endometriosis controls, and ectopic and eutopic hBD-2 expression correlated positively with IL-1β and TNF-α (P < 0.01). The study is limited by its observational design and sample size, without mechanistic experiments to prove causality.
