This preclinical study evaluated non-thermal plasma (NTP) as a surgical treatment to prevent endometriosis progression in a BALB/c mouse model. Using estradiol-supplemented transplantation of excised uteri, the researchers exposed each endometriotic lesion to NTP after laparotomy and compared outcomes with helium-exposed controls; in vitro, epithelial cells were most sensitive to NTP-activated medium while ectopic endometrial stromal cells were most resistant. Immunohistochemistry showed that immediately after NTP exposure, epithelial cells had significantly higher nuclear 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine staining than stromal cells, and by four weeks total endometriotic cyst surface area was significantly smaller with reduced epithelial proliferative activity, while lesion number did not change. The paper’s limitation is its reliance on a mouse model and lesion-level outcomes rather than demonstration of complete eradication.
