Abstract
HOX genes impart segmental identity to the developing reproductive tract. HOX gene expression in adults is found in the endometrium with peak expression levels occuring in the mid- and late secretory phase of the menstrual cycle. HOXA10 is believed to be critical for uterine receptivity at the time of embryo implantation. Decreased expression of HOXA10 in eutopic endometrium is seen in animal models of endometriosis as well as in women with endometriosis, possibly secondary to epigenetic phenomena. This chapter will review HOX genes, their role in the endometrium and in the pathogenesis of endometriosis.
