The study investigated how invasion of endometrioma tissue is associated with the activity/expression balance of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases-2 (TIMP-2), using ovarian endometrioma fragments from 24 reproductive-age patients who had undergone laparoscopy without prior medication or malignancy. Tissue strips were implanted onto the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) and, after five days, invasion patterns were assessed histologically while MMP-2 activity was measured by gelatin zymography and TIMP-2 by western blot, with observer scoring reliability reported (ICC=0.96). MMP-2 activity correlated moderately with TIMP-2 (r=0.56, p<0.05), TIMP-2 expression correlated negatively with invasion level (r=-0.35, p<0.05), and the MMP-2/TIMP-2 ratio correlated positively with invasion level (r=0.72, p0.05).
