Increased Expression of Interleukin 37 in the Eutopic and Ectopic Endometrium of Patients With Ovarian Endometriosis

This study measured interleukin-37 (IL-37) gene and protein expression in paired eutopic and ectopic endometrial tissues from women with ovarian endometriosis (n=24) and compared them with endometrium from women without endometriosis (n=15). Using quantitative real-time PCR for IL-37 transcripts and immunohistochemistry for IL-37 protein, the authors found significantly higher IL-37 gene and protein expression in both eutopic and ectopic endometrium of the endometriosis group versus controls, with ectopic tissue showing higher IL-37 levels than eutopic tissue within patients. A stated caveat is that the work is limited to expression comparisons across tissue types rather than demonstrating mechanism or causal involvement in inflammation.
