Abstract

The efficacy of therapeutic doses of Provest (10 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate .05 mg ethinyl estradiol) in controlling adolescent menstrual disorders was evaluated in 19 girls. Treatment for 3-6 months satisfactorily prevented amenorrhea-menorrhagia syndrome in 3 of 4 patients and regular ovulatory cycles were soon establishedy Normal menstruation returned in all patients treated for hypermenorrhea and the accompanying anemia disappeared. Mittelschmerz was relieved in all 5 patients during treatment although ovulation pain recurred in 2 patients after treatment was stopped. 3 of 7 patients with severe dysmenorrhea enjoyed permanent relief after the discontinuation of therapy. Treatment of mastodynia was successful in all 4 subjects. 5 cases of acne vulgaris were cleared up by the therapy. The drug was considered to be effective in managing a variety of disorders common to adolescent girls.
