Abstract

Endometriosis of large bowel leading to intestinal obstruction is very rare and involves mostly the rectum and sigmoid colon. Surgical intervention is required to avoid perforation and associated complications. A 30 year old unmarried woman presented with large bowel obstruction due to stricturing growth at rectosigmoid junction. She had no previous history suggestive of pelvic endometriosis or any previous abdominal surgery. She underwent emergency exploratory laparotomy with Hartman's procedure. The postoperative course was uneventful. On follow up after 2 months, Hartman's reversal was done using circular stapler CDH 33 mm without covering ileostomy. There was no recurrence on follow up of 6 months and patient is completely asymptomatic. Diagnosis of large bowel endometriosis requires a high index of suspicion. Surgical treatment is considered when there is acute or subacute bowel obstruction. Bowel resection for such condition has good surgical outcomes.
