Abstract

Clear cell carcinoma of the ovary is a distinct histological subtype of epithelial ovarian cancer characterized by mutations in ARID1A and PIK3CA. These malignancies account for a larger proportion of cancers in Japan than in other areas of the world, and they may be related to precancerous lesions in atypical endometriosis and adenofibroma of the ovary. While the initial treatment strategy parallels that for the more common high-grade serous epithelial ovarian cancers, these tumors may be relatively more chemoresistant, so investigation centers on novel strategies incorporating targeted agents for advanced or relapsed disease.
