Abstract

This is a report of 55 cases of endometriosis treated with norethisterone acetate 8 mg and ethinyl estradiol .1 mg(Anovlar 2 tablets daily) for 4 to 9 months. Out of the 55 cases in 40 the diagnosis was made on the basis of culdoscopy of laparotomy; in the remainder the diagnosis was clinical. Of the 40 cases 6 had previously undergone hysterectomy. Of the 55 women treated almost 2/3 were classified as successful with a further 9% improved. Successful cases are defined according to if the symptoms of endometriosis were relieved for at least 6 months following treatment and no other treatment was required for endometriosis. Pregnancy occurred following treatment in 12 cases all previously complaining of infertility. Side effects did not present a problem. About 2/3 of the patients complained of weight gain up to 10 kg but weight fell rapidly on completion of therapy. Nausea occurred in about 25% but did not present a problem after the second month of treatment.
