This case report with literature review describes a rare instance of scar endometriosis in the rectus sheath after a cesarean section, where endometrial tissue was found within a prior surgical scar. The authors discuss the condition’s definition, typical background of obstetrical or gynecological surgery, and the challenges of diagnosis because scar endometriosis can be confused with other surgical problems. They report that the patient underwent wide surgical excision of the lesion, and the paper reviews aspects of pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment while emphasizing rarity and diagnostic difficulty as key limitations of single-case evidence. This paper is centrally about endometriosis—specifically scar endometriosis arising in a post-cesarean rectus sheath.

Abstract

Endometriosis is defined as presence of functioning endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. Endometriosis can sometimes occur in a previous surgical scar. Scar endometriosis is rare and difficult to diagnose. It mostly follows obstetrical and gynecological surgeries. This condition is often confused with other surgical conditions. We are reporting one case of scar endometriosis involving rectus sheath following cesarean section. The patient required wide surgical excision of the lesion. The pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of this rare condition are being discussed. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/njog.v9i2.11764
