Estrogen Receptor Localization in Formalin-Fixed, Paraffin-Embedded Endometrium and Endometriotic Tissues

This study utilized monoclonal estrogen receptor antibodies to localize ER expression in paraffin-embedded sections of endometrial and endometriotic tissues from twenty surgical specimens. The researchers found that the majority of endometriotic lesions mimicked the cyclic estrogen receptor expression patterns of the corresponding eutopic endometrium, particularly when the ectopic tissue could be histologically dated as being in phase with the uterus. However, cases where endometriosis could not be dated showed variable staining, including diffuse nuclear staining in glands resembling basalis tissue despite weak staining in the concurrent secretory endometrium. These findings indicate that immunohistochemical staining for estrogen receptors can support the histopathologic diagnosis of endometriosis by highlighting characteristic hormonal responsiveness in the affected tissue.
