Comparison of the Efficacy and Tolerability of Dienogest and Dienogest Plus Ethinylestradiol on Endometriosis Related-Pain
This retrospective study compared dienogest and dienogest plus ethinylestradiol for endometriosis pain, finding both effective with similar impacts on endometrioma size, though the combination was less effective for deep dyspareunia.

This retrospective study compared continuous oral dienogest alone versus dienogest plus ethinylestradiol in 81 patients with clinically diagnosed endometrioma and chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, or deep dyspareunia, assessing pain on a 10-point numerical rating scale at baseline and after 3 and 6 months. Both regimens reduced chronic pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea scores significantly at 6 months, with a larger reduction for dienogest plus ethinylestradiol in both outcomes, while deep dyspareunia improved significantly only in the dienogest group (with a non-significant smaller decrease in the combination group). Endometrioma size did not differ significantly between groups at 6 months, and the paper’s main limitation is its retrospective design. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it directly compares hormonal regimens for endometriosis-related pain and endometrioma size.
