Mean Platelet Volume Increase in Endometriomas and Benign Ovarian Cysts: A Prospective Case-Controlled Study
Mean platelet volume was increased in women with ovarian endometriomas and benign cysts, showing predictive value for both conditions compared to an infertile control group.

This prospective case-control study compared mean platelet volume (MPV) measured from complete blood counts in women with surgically confirmed ovarian endometriomas, women with benign ovarian cysts, and infertile healthy controls (n=98, 94, and 99, respectively). MPV differed significantly among groups (p<0.01), and MPV was statistically similar between the endometrioma and benign cyst groups but different from the infertile control group; MPV also showed moderate discrimination with reported areas under the curve (~0.72–0.73) and sensitivities/specificities around the low-to-mid 70%/60% range at a cut-off of 9.05 fl. A key limitation explicitly implied by the design is that MPV increases were assessed at one time point in a histology-confirmed surgical population, which may not generalize to all clinical settings or timing of blood sampling. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it evaluates whether mean platelet volume is increased in women with ovarian endometriomas and estimates its predictive performance relative to benign cysts.
