Effects of Hydrogen Gas Inhalation on Endometriosis in Rats
Hydrogen gas inhalation reduced endometrial explant size, inhibited cell proliferation, and improved antioxidant markers in rats with surgically induced endometriosis.

This paper studied whether inhaled molecular hydrogen (67% H2-33% O2 for 1 hour/day over 4 weeks) reduces experimentally induced endometriosis-like lesions in Sprague Dawley rats, administered either immediately after surgery or starting 4 weeks later. Using histology, immunohistochemistry, and real-time PCR along with serum and tissue measurements of antioxidant enzymes and malondialdehyde, the authors found that high-dose H2 reduced explant size, inhibited cell proliferation, improved superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities, and modulated malondialdehyde, catalase, and the expression of matrix metalloproteinase 9 and cyclooxygenase 2; nitrogen inhalation at the same dose did not show protection. They also monitored estrous cycles and reported no change in normal cyclicity, but the study’s limitation is that it is an animal EMT model rather than a direct human clinical trial. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it tests hydrogen gas inhalation as a protective antioxidant intervention in a rat endometriosis model.
