Abstract

Although the progestins in common play an integral role in the endogenous synthesis of all steroids, precise definition of what a progestin is is nonetheless difficult, since the progestational steroids are ubiquitous steroids of multiple sources in the body and have many different effects and facets of action. The gonadal and metabolic effects of the progestins are discussed in detail. Uses in menstrual abnormalities, contraception, cancer, endometriosis, and habitual abortion are considered from the therapeutic point of view.
