Correlation of polypeptide N-acetylgalactosamine transferases-3 and -6 to different stages of endometriosis

This study investigated expression patterns of polypeptide N-acetylgalactosamine transferases GalNAc-T3 and GalNAc-T6 in clinicopathologically characterized endometriosis by comparing ectopic and eutopic endometrial tissues from women with EMS (n=12) to control endometrium from women undergoing uterine septum surgery (n=12). Using qRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and western blotting (with CD-10 confirmed tissue identity), the authors found that both GalNAc-T3 and GalNAc-T6 were expressed in all groups without significant menstrual-cycle–related changes, but were significantly lower in ectopic endometrium than in eutopic and control endometrium, with no significant eutopic versus control differences. Expression of both enzymes was also significantly lower in stage III/IV EMS compared with stage I/II. The paper’s caveat is the small sample size (12 per group), which may limit generalizability. This paper is centrally about endometriosis—specifically altered GalNAc-T3 and GalNAc-T6 expression across ectopic versus eutopic tissue and across endometriosis stages.
