Abstract

This study reviewed 5214 vaginal tubectomies performed at the Faisalabad (Pakistan) District Health Office Hospital and Sterilization Center between December 1978 and December 1982. The major indications for this procedure were multiparity socioeconomic factors and medical problems. Only women with a mobile uterus of normal size and with no adnexal pathology or infection were selected for tubectomy; obesity was not a contraindication. The overall complication rate in this series was 3.64/1000 and included 3 cases of vaginal bleeding 2 cases of small bowel injury 4 cases of rectal injury and 6 cases of infection; there was only 1 case in which a serious complication occurred. 4 pregnancies were recorded in the follow-up period yielding a failure rate of 0.76/1000. Advantages of vaginal tubectomy over abdominal tubectomy include its low incidence of postoperative complications and discomfort lack of abdominal scar ability to be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia and early ambulation. The chief disadvantage of vaginal tubectomy is its technical difficulty; considerable skill and experience are required. It is recommended that this procedure be performed in the 1st half of the menstrual cycle. Interval tubectomy is selected by most patients and allows them time to recover from delivery and review their decision for sterilization.
