Abstract

Endometriosis is a condition that affects around 1 in 10 women in the UK. Despite this prevalence, diagnosis is often delayed. Wendy Norton and Debby Holloway explain the role of the practice nurse in supporting women with this condition Endometriosis is a chronic condition where endometrial tissue forms lesions outside the uterus, resulting in internal bleeding, inflammation, fibrosis, and adhesion formation. It is estimated that as many as one in 10 women in the UK have this painful condition. The signs and symptoms of endometriosis vary in their severity and presentation, increasing difficulties with diagnosis. Earlier diagnosis and support may help women to manage the condition and its impact on their day-to-day lives. Endometriosis has physical, psychological and sexual health impacts on women's—and their partners'—lives. Practice nurses are ideally placed to support women with endometriosis.
