This immunohistochemical study evaluated the expression of matrix metalloproteinases MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9, and MMP-14 in surgical specimens from 40 women with extragenital endometriosis, comparing lesion tissue to normal eutopic endometrium. MMP-2 and MMP-14 showed significant expression in glandular cells of endometriotic lesions, and MMP-9 was evident in both stromal and glandular cells, while MMP-1 was not present. In normal endometrium, MMP-14 had high reactivity whereas MMP-2 and MMP-9 had low reactivity.
