Abstract

15 patients (21-32 years) suffering from post ill amenorrhea-galactorrhea (PPAG), which was associated with an alternation in the secretion of prolactin and absence of cyclic gonadotropins, were studied with in-depth interviews to determine whether PPAG was also associated with psychological factors. The patients were treated during the investigation with 2-bromo-alpha-ergocryptine mesylate. Menarche had been delayed in all the women and 11 of the 15 patients had a history of significant menstrual irregularity. There seemed to be a definite pattern to the ability or inability of these patients to cope with stress; their responses indicating passive hopelessness and denial. Psychosexual stresses were evident. Patients came from predominantly all-girl families. All but 4 came from seriously disturbed families. There was a high incidence of myocardial infarction in family histories. Patients noted gradual improvement while being treated with the drug, reverting when the drug was discontinued.
