This narrative review examined complementary therapies for endometriosis by searching multiple databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science, and others) and Google Scholar up to February 2019 using terms related to acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage, and transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation. From 8,702 initial records, 12 studies met the review’s inclusion criteria. The review reported significant improvements with acupuncture and herbal medicine for endometriosis-related outcomes including pelvic chronic pain, dyspareunia, dysmenorrhea, and infertility, and found massage therapy and transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation to be supportive for pain management; it also noted two studies where herbal medicine had effects comparable to routine chemical drugs for pain reduction and fertility improvement. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it specifically reviews complementary approaches (acupuncture, medicinal herbs, massage, and TENS) for managing endometriosis complications.
