Mucin gene polymorphisms are associated with endometriosis in Korean women

This paper studied whether single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the mucin genes MUC1 and MUC4 are associated with endometriosis risk in Korean women. Using a case–controlled design with 29 endometriosis clinical samples and 27 functional cysts as controls, the authors genotyped 16 MUC1 SNPs and 8 MUC4 SNPs by PCR amplification and DNA sequencing, then assessed single mutations and haplotypes. They found that MUC4 single mutations were not associated with endometriosis, but that specific MUC4 haplotype frequencies (T/T + T/T + C/C) involving rs2291653, rs2291654, and rs375068067 were associated with endometriosis, whereas MUC1 genotype was not correlated with susceptibility.
