Diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography with laparoscopy for assessment of benign adnexal masses
This study compared ultrasonography to laparoscopy for diagnosing benign adnexal masses, finding laparoscopy generally more accurate, especially for endometriomas and dermoid cysts.

This study evaluated 32 women with benign adnexal masses using clinical examination, ultrasonography (USG), and laparoscopy, comparing USG findings with laparoscopy and histopathology to estimate diagnostic accuracy. For endometrioma specifically, USG sensitivity was 50% versus 100% for laparoscopy, with specificity 94.1% versus 100%, while for simple ovarian cysts USG sensitivity was 20% versus 100% for laparoscopy; dermoid cysts showed USG sensitivity 66.7% versus 100% for laparoscopy. Both USG and laparoscopy had 100% sensitivity and specificity for ectopic pregnancy, para-ovarian cyst, and tubo-ovarian abscess, and benign serous cystadenoma was missed by both modalities. The paper concludes that ultrasonography should be the primary imaging modality, but its results are limited by the small sample size and focus on a benign adnexal-mass cohort. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it reports diagnostic accuracy for endometrioma using ultrasonography versus laparoscopy and histopathology.
