The association between dietary acid load and endometriosis: a case-control study

This hospital-based case-control study in Tehran, Iran (Feb–Sep 2021) examined the association between dietary acid load and endometriosis among 105 women diagnosed with endometriosis and 208 healthy controls, with endometriosis status confirmed by a gynecologist blinded to the study aims. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated 168-item food frequency questionnaire, and dietary acid load was estimated using Potential Renal Acid Load (PRAL) and Net Endogenous Acid Production (NEAP), with logistic regression used to estimate odds of endometriosis. Higher DAL was associated with increased odds: each one-unit increase in PRAL corresponded to an 8% increase in endometriosis odds, and each one-unit increase in NEAP corresponded to a 4% increase. As a case-control design, the study cannot establish temporality, and the authors call for prospective studies to confirm findings and clarify mechanisms.
