Abstract

Endometritis is a persistent inflammation of the endometrial mucosa often caused by pathogens ascending into the uterine cavity. Accordingly, it may accompany pelvic inflammatory disease of the upper genital tract. Common infectious agents associated with chronic endometritis are Chlamydia, Mycoplasma/Ureaplasma, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, and Streptococcus agalactiae, among others. Chronic endometritis may also be associated with a recent pregnancy, either an abortion or a term pregnancy. Instrumentation, such as a prior biopsy, an intrauterine contraceptive device, cervical stenosis, and the presence of a structural lesion such as a polyp, leiomyoma, hyperplasia, or carcinoma have all been documented as possible causes or triggering factors in the development of endometritis. Any process that dilates the internal cervical os can lead to endometritis as an ascending infection from the lower genital tract.
