This paper reviews five cases of scar endometriosis seen in a single unit over the preceding five years and includes a literature review, focusing on how to diagnose an abdominal wall mass that occurs near a prior surgical scar. The authors note that pre-operative ultrasound and fine needle aspiration may help, but they emphasize that diagnosis requires a high degree of suspicion to avoid delays and unnecessary referrals, which is the main diagnostic dilemma highlighted. A key caveat is that the evidence base is limited to a small case series plus a literature review, without a larger prospective comparison of diagnostic accuracy. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it specifically addresses diagnostic challenges and pre-operative imaging/cytology considerations for scar endometriosis near prior abdominal surgery.

Abstract

To diagnose scar endometriosis when an abdominal wall mass is found near the scar from a previous operation requires a high degree of suspicion. Pre-operatively, ultrasound and fine needle aspiration can be of help. Awareness of diagnosis avoids delay in diagnosis, treatment, and unnecessary referrals to other specialities. We reviewed five cases of scar endometriosis presenting to our unit in the last 5 years and included a literature review. Similar content being viewed by others
