Abstract

Abstract The relation between serum hormone levels, endometrial cellular steroid receptor levels and endometrial dating was evaluated in the mid‐luteal phase of normoprolactinemic and hyperprolactinemic women for a better understanding of luteal insufficiency and determination of the possible effect of prolactin on the endometrium. In 8 out of 17 luteal hyperprolactinemic patients (47%), the endometrium appeared out‐of‐phase although there was no difference in basal plasma steroid levels between normo‐ and hyper‐prolactinemic in‐phase endometria. Such out‐of‐phase endometria, however, showed significantly decreased estrogen receptor levels. These findings suggest that one of the causes of the endometrium phase discrepancy during the mid‐luteal phase may be the direct effect of prolactin on the endometrium or an indigenous disturbance of cellular steroid receptor synthesis.
